I created an installation of eighty “souls” and three “bones” for this show. The eighty souls are miniature images made of resist dyed and embellished tracing vellum. The small vellum pieces, which have an x-ray like quality, summon to mind the unknown innards of the immaterial part of humans. The eighty souls were once part of two larger pieces that I exhumed from their storage “coffins” packed away in 1995. The pieces were dismantled and reworked into small individual pieces which can stand on their own or interact with other souls in the group.
The bones that make up the second part of the installation are three cherry limbs found on a Vashon beach and then encrusted with orphaned buttons and beads. The mix of natural cherry limbs with manmade buttons create unworldly forms. The bones are displayed lying in state in pine boxes.
